Prestbury Golf Club’s young star Josh Turnock is very proud to be chosen as the Captain of Cheshire Boys for 2018.

Josh said: “It was a great honour to be asked to Captain the Under 18 Cheshire Boys for 2018 and I hope to lead the team to victory in as many matches as possible.

“Last year we came so close in the Four Counties at Shifnal G.C where we were only narrowly beaten by one point into second place by Lancashire so it would be nice if we could go one better in 2018.

“Having grown up with quite a few of the other players within the squad over the past few years a lot of us have become good friends so I believe this will help the squad grow even stronger.

“I am a student at Tytherington High School studying A Level Maths, Biology and PE.

“I started playing golf at nine and joined Prestbury at the age of ten and two years later went for trials and was offered a place on the Cheshire County Golf Partnership Under 14's. “I then moved up to the main Cheshire Under 16's and then Under 18's Elite Squads and in 2015 I attended trials for England North West Under 16's and gained one of eight places and in the following year had trials for England North West Under 18's and gained one of eight places. “In 2017 I was Junior Captain at Prestbury G.C and represented Cheshire in main Junior County matches and this is now followed in 2018 by the Cheshire Under 18's Captaincy.

“My playing highlights include winning the Prestbury Junior Matchplay three times along with other club competitions including some main Men’s events. “Last year I finished seventh in the 72 hole Men’s Cheshire Strokeplay Championship at Bromborough with gross rounds of 78, 70, 71, 72. “I was second in the Frank Stableford at Wallasey with rounds rounds of 73 and 70 and finished in ninth place in the 72 hole Aberconwy Trophies event at Conwy & Llandudno with rounds of 77, 77, 76, 73. “Also last season I achieved my lowest gross round of 66 (-5) in a competitive round at Prestbury and reduced my handicap from two to scratch by end of the season. “For my progress in golf I would like to thank my Mum and Dad (Matthew Turnock, Professional at Mottram Hall and nominated for Coach of the Year by England Golf) along with the Cheshire County Coaches, Cheshire County Junior organisers and officials plus the England North West U16 and U18 Coaches.

“My golfing heroes and role models are Rory McIlroy and Jamie Donaldson for his amazing Ryder Cup winning shot.

“I have recently taken my SAT entrance exam tests as I am hoping to go to America at the end of 2018 on a Golf Scholarship. “I would love the opportunity to improve my game further and see how good I can become.

“Finally I would like to say that I am grateful to the Cheshire County, the Manager and other officials for all the opportunities I have been given over the years and I hope to do Cheshire proud in the 2018 season.”
